HUGE News - May 2017

NEWS FROM NABUGABO COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE, ONE OF THE MAIN PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY HUGE

Staff and pupils are currently enjoying a well-deserved holiday after a very busy first term of the 2017 academic year. Our terms follow the Ugandan East African model: Term One - February 6th to May 5th, Term Two - May 29th to August 25th and Term Three - September 18th to December 8th.

Twelve new children joined Primary One class in February bringing the school's total enrollment (in classes P1 to P5) up to 112.

Judy Batten returned to Nabugabo in March for seven weeks when she was delighted to welcome 22 staff and students from Sotogrande International School. In just two weeks they completed truly remarkable projects - see the April NCLC 'Lakeshore Newsletter' for details. Nabugabo teachers attended a two day workshop at Acorns International School, Kampala, as part of their ongoing professional development.

With the onset of the rains, malaria has raised its ugly head once again - in the last two weeks of school 19 children were treated for malaria at Ssunga clinic; thankfully all are now well and enjoying their break. End of term 1 reports have been sent to all sponsors and we are delighted with the progress that all the children have made.

With warmest regards, all the staff, pupils and parents/guardians at NCLC.

SCHOOL SUPPORT

A huge thank you to a number of schools who continue to support NCLC and HUGE making material differences to the school and community:

It is Pangbourne College's Centenary year and Nabugabo will be one of the beneficiaries of the schools fundraising efforts. Caroline Bond Deputy Head Pastoral, visited Nabugabo in Autumn of last year. She said "I have noticed huge changes in Nabugabo since I first visited three years ago, particularly in the confidence and well-being of the children, in their nutrition and the enormous progress they have made in their reading and writing skills. That is hugely rewarding and tangible proof that all the money the college raises for Nabugabo goes to a very worthwhile cause"

Dulwich Prep School have just chosen HUGE as one of their chosen charities following a visit to Nabugabo by one of the teachers Rob Monteith in 2016.

We are delighted that Magdalen College School, Oxford voted to support HUGE and we look forward to building a relationship with them.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our supporters, whether it be sponsoring a child or providing a pair of shoes or socks, we are extremely grateful. NCLC is a thriving happy school where the children have a tremendous sense of well-being. Without your continued support none of this would be possible.
